This excursion is not like the other Turkish nights on offer in Cappadocia, as it only has the Whirling Dervishes; no other dances are performed on the night.
The whirling dance or Sufi whirling is part of a formal ceremony known as Sema. It has its origin in the inspiration of Mevlana Rumi who was a Dervish himself. The ceremony is performed to try to reach religious ecstasy, and it symbolises the different meanings of a mystic cycle to perfection.
The philosophy of “come as you are” by Mevlana Rumi was attractive to many people searching for true meaning in life. As people began to follow Mevlana, they came to love the creator and his creation. This love is expressed in the dance of the Dervish. With one hand raised to the Creator, the dancer receives, and with the other hand turned down toward the earth, and they pass on the blessing to the Creation.
The whole ceremony takes about one hour and you finish off the night with ‘Şerbet’, a religious drink after the ceremony concludes.
